A simple 4-step process:

This is a logical series of steps that I use to create distinctive crafts and furniture that aim to meet your needs and tastes, exceed your expectations and last a lifetime. When building custom furniture, I am a one-man enterprise that builds each piece individually, so the necessary care and attention to produce a quality creation is assured. Each customized piece makes a statement of quality and authenticity and reflects the profound effort and craftsmanship that go into making it. Custom hardwood furniture is enduring and supports sustainability for local communities.
I will update you throughout the entire process and seek your input and feedback as necessary.

  DISCOVER

I start the process with a series of question and answer sessions and           emails with the customer. The following is discussed:

  • Functional use: The role that the piece will play in your home plays a key part in the design process. We will discuss features for the piece, including essential and preferred elements.

  • Design and dimensions: The type of room where the piece will be located and its surroundings influence the design process. If possible, I would like to visit your home to see where the piece will be placed, before finalizing the design and dimensions.

  • Choice of lumber: I use high-quality natural hardwoods – cherry, maple, mahogany, walnut, padauk and purple heart. Wood pairings and inlays, which highlight contrasts in color and grain, are also available.

We will discuss production time during the initial meetings.

DESIGN

At this stage I work with the customer to create and refine the design until it fulfills their requirements. Customers are encouraged to provide pictures or sketches of pieces that reflect their preferences to assist in this effort.

I will prepare a proposal with dimensionally accurate drawings and multiple views of the design based on your requirements. The proposal will provide an accurate representation of what the finished piece will look like and how it will fit together. I will seek feedback, at this juncture, to alter the design where necessary.

I will then prepare a final proposal that confirms all details of the design, including the hardwood to be used. A sign-off will be required before the build step begins.

BUILD

Attention to detail, precision and symmetry are key to building elegant, functional crafts and furniture that withstand the test of time.

At this point I utilize the design drawings to properly calculate, cut and shape lumber and other materials until the piece accurately represents the agreed upon design. A combination of machines, power and hand tools are used.

Various joinery techniques are used to ensure the structural integrity of the piece. I take care to ensure proper glue faces, grain direction and tight joinery, to produce life-long durability in the finished piece.

Precise hand-sanding ensures proper fit and finish. I will sand, in multiple stages, using sequential sandpaper grades and steel wool to create a beautiful and durable piece. I will finish the piece with food safe, non-toxic, tung or Danish oil to highlight the natural colors and tones of the lumber used while providing sealing and protection.

DELIVERY & CARE

In the final step I carefully package the piece for delivery.

Fine hardwood furniture requires gentle cleaning and light maintenance. I include detailed care instructions which outline short and long-term recommendations to ensure that the appearance and integrity of the piece are maintained.
